Manchester-based creative and designer Tim Denton has teamed up with Dandara Living at Chapel Wharf to create a unique interactive art installation.
Dandara Living
Titled ‘Creating Communities’, the live art display will appear at Dandara Living’s Chapel Wharf development on Chapel Street as part of the 50 Windows of Creativity project.
50 Windows of Creativity is a new art trail created by Wild in Art (the team behind the award-winning Bee in The City) in partnership with Manchester City Council and will transform Manchester into an innovative art gallery.
Launching on October 26th, those taking part in the trail, will be able to visit Chapel Wharf and see their own face become part of the exhibition.
Tim will ask visitors to the Chapel Warf window to pose and he will then trace their portrait onto the Dandara window using a giant pantograph – which is an ancient Greek tool used in engineering to reduce or enlarge designs.
The pantograph simultaneously mirrors the traced design with a second pen on to a permanent surface which will be displayed at Chapel Wharf for the duration of the project and those taking part can take a picture of Tim and their finished artwork.
I was inspired to create the installation, after speaking with the team Dandara Living who wanted a display which would reflect the real sense of community and solidarity for which the city of Manchester is so well known. And because of the nature of the installation it can be used in a completely safe and socially distanced way.

Dandara Living’s Chapel Wharf development is just one of 50 locations across Manchester which will be transformed into art displays, all curated by well-known and emerging local artists.
Dandara Living is also one of the event’s partners, alongside other businesses including Autotrader, Hobs Repro, Ocean Outdoor, Jamieson Contracting and TfGM.
Vicky Robinson, City Operations Manager at Chapel Wharf, said: “We are so lucky to be able to work with Tim. His work revolves around placemaking and creating a sense of community and belonging which aligns perfectly with our ethos at Dandara Living.
“Together we have created something that brings together family connections, friendships and other relationships in an interactive way during a time where we may have to stay away from our loved ones, and we really hope people will come and visit Chapel Wharf to experience it for themselves.”
50 Windows of Creativity will raise money for the artists involved and The Lord Mayor of Manchester Charity Appeal Trust – We Love MCR Charity, by auctioning off several items of artwork.
